Dr. William L. Johnston, retired State Supervisor of Music for Illinois and Plainfield Illinois school band director, visited the Bach manufacturing facility in Elkhart, Indiana to get a close up view of how Bach instruments are made. Tedd Waggoner, plant manager, provided a personal tour for Dr. Johnston and his wife, Bette, who had never seen how instruments were made.
Dr. Johnston began his teaching career in Plainfield, Illinois in 1948. At that time Plainfield schools had no music program and he started from "scratch". During his nine year tenure there, the band was very successful and received national recognition through performances at the Mid-West Band Clinic and the MENC convention in Cleveland. After four years at the University of Wisconsin, Johnston was appointed as State Supervisor of Music in Illinois, a position he held for ten years. He then joined the New Jersey Department of Education for seven years and completed his career at Oklahoma State University. Since retirement in 1986, they both have resided in Bloomington, Illinois.
“Past and present music educators worldwide recognize the Bach name for outstanding quality,” said Scott Jennie, VP of Marketing at Conn-Selmer. “Dr. Johnston’s tour of our manufacturing facility was an important part of the on-going relationship Conn-Selmer has with the entire education community”. All Bach instruments include a genuine Vincent Bach mouthpiece and carry a full five year warranty.
